TEAM NOTES
• Freshman Tadric Jackson made his first collegiate start for Georgia Tech, replacing Chis Bolden, who had started the Yellow Jackets’ last seven games and 11 altogether this season. Tech had utilized the same starting lineup for the last seven games – Bolden and Travis Jorgenson at the guards, Demarco Cox at center, Marcus Georges-Hunt and Robert Sampson at the forwards.
• This was the eighth different lineup head coach Brian Gregory has utilized this season. Only Georges-Hunt has started all 26 games for Tech this season, and 10 different players have started at least one game.
• Tech utilized 10 players against Florida State, and nine of them scored. Brian Gregory has used at least nine players in every game this season, at least 10 in nine games.
• All three of Tech’s wins have come by double digits and an average margin of victory of 15 points. The 11-point margin over Clemson was the smallest of the three wins. The Jackets led by as many as 18 points with 4:56 left in the game.
• Tech led 23-21 at the half, the 15th time this season the Jackets have led at the half (10-4 record).
• Tech scored 63 points against a Clemson team that had been allowing 60 points a game (3rd-best in the ACC) and 58.5 points to ACC teams (2nd to Virginia).
• Tech shot 46.3 percent from the floor, its fourth-best effort this season, against a Clemson team that has allowed 38.8 percent to all opponents (3rd in the ACC) and a conference-low 38.5 percent to ACC opponents.
• In the last seven games, Tech has averaged 66.9 points, shot 43.3 percent from the floor and 34 percent from three-point range, and compiled 89 assists (on 176 field goals) to 84 turnovers.
• Tech had 15 assists on 25 made field goals and has had 31 assists on 46 made field goals in its last two games.
• Tech scored 20 points off 14 Clemson turnovers, matching a season high from game two this season against Alabama A&M, and one game after scoring 19 points off of 18 FSU turnovers.
• Tech has averaged 14 fast break points over its last six games, compared to a season average of 8.3 per game.
• Tech outscored Clemson 40-20 in the paint, and the 40 points was the most for the Yellow Jackets since getting 40 at Notre Dame on Jan. 3. Tech has scored more in the paint only once – 42 vs. IPFW in game three.
• Tech’s three primary big men (Cox, Mitchell, Sampson) scored 25 of Tech’s 63 points (11-for-22 FG), with Cox getting 12 of those.
• Tech out-rebounded Clemson 38-29, including a 23-13 margin in the second half. Only four teams – Wake Forest (Jan. 7), Virginia, Duke and Florida State – have beaten the Yellow Jackets on the boards this season and one (Northwestern) has tied Tech. The Jackets entered the Clemson game 15th in the nation in rebound margin, and remain on a school-record pace for rebound margin at +7.9 per game, +5.5 per game in conference play.
• Tech grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and scored just six points off those second chances. Tech entered the game 10th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game.
• Tech went just 9-for-16 from the free throw line against Clemson and has gone just 46-for-78 in the last five games. The Jackets had been No. 3 in the ACC in free throw percentage against conference opponents.
• Tech got 28 of its 63 points from the bench, with Josh Heath scoring a game high 14 points. It was the second straight game Tech’s leading scorer had come off the bench (Charles Mitchell led Tech with 17 points against Florida State).
• Clemson went 4-for-15 from three-point range (26.7 pct.). Tech has yielded 53 threes in 231 attempts (22.9 pct.) in its wins this season, 91 threes in 234 attempts (38.9 pct.) in its losses.
• Virginia defeated Tech by 29 points, but the Yellow Jackets’ other nine conference defeats have come by a total of 38 points (3.8 points per game), two of those in overtime. Tech has lost twice by one point, twice by two points, once by three, once by four, once by five, once by six and twice by seven. The seven-point loss at Notre Dame was a double-overtime defeat. Nine of those defeats have been one- or two-possession games at the 1-minute mark.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
• Demarco Cox notched his fifth double-digit game in the last seven Tech games, and his 13th one this season. He has seven double-digit scoring games in ACC games. Cox had only five double-digit games in 102 games at Ole Miss. Cox has averaged 9.3 points and 6.3 rebounds over his last seven games.
• Cox went 6-for-8 from the floor to get back over 50 percent (50.8 pct.) for the season.
• Marcus Georges-Hunt scored in double digits for the eighth straight game, 20th time this season, 60th time in his career and 29th time in an ACC game. Georges-Hunt had never previously scored in double figures more than five straight games (five times, twice this season).
• In his last eight games, Georges-Hunt has averaged 16.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists. He has shot 53.4 percent from the floor (47-for-88), 50 percent on threes (10-for-20) and 78.4 percent from the free throw line (29-for-37).
• Georges-Hunt is hitting 47 percent of his shots from inside the three-point line this season.
• Georges-Hunt did not attempt a free throw against Clemson, the first time he has not attempted a free throw since Nov. 27 against Marquette.
• Josh Heath scored a career-high 14 points (4-for-5 FG, 6-for-6 FT) and reached double digits for the first time since scoring 12 at Northwestern on Dec. 3, second double-figure game this season. Heath also had three assists and three steals with no turnovers in 22 minutes.
• Heath has 23 assists and four turnovers in Tech’s last eight games (four games of one turnover, four games of no turnovers). He has 77 assists and 34 turnovers for the season (2.26-1 ratio, 6th in the ACC). In ACC games, 33 assists and 15 turnovers (2.2-1).
• Robert Sampson grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds, beating his previous best of nine against Marquette, Boston College and Florida State. He has taken six or more in 19 of 26 games this season.
