MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

• Opening tip: won by Virginia Tech (Jackets have won 14 of 24 opening tips this season)

TEAM NOTES

• Georgia Tech had a 58-48 lead with 5:07 left in the game and lost for the third time this season when holding a lead at the 5-minute mark.

• Tech utilized the same starting lineup for the sixth straight game – Chris Bolden and Travis Jorgenson at the guards, Demarco Cox at center, Marcus Georges-Hunt and Robert Sampson at the forwards.

• Tech utilized 10 players at Virginia Tech, and nine of them scored. Brian Gregory has used at least nine players in every game this season, at least 10 in nine games.

• Head coach Brian Gregory has utilized seven different lineups this season. Only Georges-Hunt has started all 24 games for Tech this season, and nine different players have started at least one game.

• Tech led 31-26 at the half, and the Jackets have held a halftime lead in 13 games this season (five in ACC games). Tech is 9-4 when leading at intermission.

• Tech has averaged a shade over 70 points per game over its last four (70 at Miami, 80 vs. NC State, 66 at Duke, 73 vs. Wake, 63 at Virginia Tech). In those games, the Jackets have scored an average of 106.3 points per 100 possessions, compared to 100.0 for the entire season and 98.6 over its entire ACC schedule.

• Tech shot under 40 percent from the floor for the ninth time this season, and sixth time in an ACC game.

• Virginia Tech became the second opponent to shoot 50 percent or better (52.1 pct.) from the floor this season, joining Notre Dame (53.3 pct.) on Jan. 3. The Hokies made 56 percent from the floor in the second half.

• Tech held a 39-27 advantage om the boards against Virginia Tech. Only Wake Forest, Virginia and Duke have beaten Tech on the boards this season, and there has been one tie (Northwestern). The Jackets entered the Virginia Tech game 14th in the nation in rebound margin (now +8.2 per game, +5.8 per game in conference play).

• Tech grabbed 19 offensive rebounds (to 22 defensive boards for Virginia Tech) and scored 19 points off those second chances. Mitchell had seven offensive boards himself.

• Tech went just 13-for-19 from the free throw line against Virginia Tech and has gone just 29-for-48 in the last three games. The Jackets had been No. 2 in the ACC in free throw percentage against conference opponents.

• Four Tech players are averaging 5.8 or more rebounds in ACC games – Mitchell 6.7, Georges-Hunt 6.2, Cox 6.0, Sampson 5.8 – and each of them rank in the ACC’s top 20. Those four players totaled 20 rebounds against Virginia Tech.

• Tech got 36 of its 63 points from the bench, a season high. Charles Mitchell led Tech with 17 points, and Tadric Jackson scored 10..

• Tech’s three primary big men (Cox, Mitchell, Sampson) scored just 19 of Tech’s 63 points (9-for-24 FG), with Mitchell getting 17 of those. Sampson played just five minutes due to foul trouble, and Cox went 1-for-5. The Hokies outscored the Jackets, 38-36, in the paint.

• Virginia Tech went 5-for-12 from three-point range (41.7 pct.). Tech has yielded 49 threes in 216 attempts (22.7 pct.) in its wins this season, 87 threes in 222 attempts (39.2 pct.) in its losses.

• Virginia defeated Tech by 29 points, but the Yellow Jackets’ other nine conference defeats have come by a total of 34 points (3.8 points per game), two of those in overtime. Tech has lost twice by one point, twice by two points, once by three, once by five, once by six and twice by seven. The seven-point loss at Notre Dame was a double-overtime defeat. Seven of those defeats have been one- or two-possession games at the 1-minute mark.

 

INDIVIDUAL NOTES

Chris Bolden, with 10 points against Virginia Tech (4-1 FG, 1-5 on 3s), scored in double digits for the fourth time in Tech’s last five games. He is averaging 10.8 points over his last six (including nine points against Boston College) while hitting 25-of-55 shots from the floor and 13-of-33 on threes.

Marcus Georges-Hunt scored in double digits for the sixth straight game, 18th time this season, 58th of his career and 27th time in an ACC game. Georges-Hunt has never previously scored in double figures more than five straight games (five times, twice this season).

• In his last six games, Georges-Hunt has averaged 17.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists. He has shot 52.1 percent from the floor (36-for-69), 46.7 percent on threes (7-for-15) and 81.3 percent from the free throw line (26-for-32).

• Georges-Hunt is hitting 46.2 percent of his shots from inside the three-point line this season.

• Georges-Hunt, Tech’s leader in free throws made and attempted and percentage, went just 4-for-4 at Virginia Tech to improve his career best percentage to 78.1. He has made a career-best 100 free throws this season

Charles Mitchell led Tech in scoring for the second straight game with 17 points while hitting 7-10 shots from the floor and 3-of-7 from the free throw line. It was his 13th double-digit game this season and seventh in an ACC game.

• Mitchell, who leads Tech in turnovers this season, has not turned the ball over for two straight games and has just three turnovers in his last five games.

• Point guards Travis Jorgenson and Josh Heath combined for six assists and four turnovers against Virginia Tech, and they collectively have a 2.06-1 assist-turnover ratio this season.

Travis Jorgenson scored four points and has averaged 7.4 points over his last five games, hitting 14-for-24 shots from the floor.

• Freshman Tadric Jackson logged his first double-digit scoring game against an ACC team with 10 points (4-of 9 FG, 2-of-4 on 3s). It was his fourth double-digit game of the season and first since scoring 12 at Dayton on Dec. 23.
