ATLANTA (Feb. 26) – First baseman Chris Mittendorf’s three-run double capped a six- run ninth inning for UNC Greensboro on Saturday, February 26, as the Spartans upset No. 7 Georgia Tech 10-6 at Russ Chandler Stadium.
With the score knotted at 4-4, the Spartans (5-3) broke ahead in the ninth on a two-run single by Jeremy Purcell off Tech reliever Kevin Cameron. After Nelson Mayton struck out to lead off the ninth, eight consecutive Spartans reached base safely, as UNCG built a 10-4 lead.
The Jackets (7-2) were unable to rally in the bottom half of the inning after a Bryan Prince home run cut the lead to 10-6, which proved to be the final score.
UNCG got on the board first with solo home runs by Kyle Tasco in the first and Ryan Gordon in the third to build a 2-0 lead.
Tech used single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-2 lead, before Gordon blasted his second home run of the day, a two-run shot in the top of the seventh to give UNCG the lead back at 4-3.
An RBI single by Prince in the bottom of the seventh knotted the score at 4-4, setting the stage for the UNCG rally in the ninth. Prince finished the game 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in the losing cause for Tech.
Right-hander Taft Cable (3-1) captured his third win of the season in relief of starter Aaron Horne. Cable allowed five runs (four earned) and seven hits over 6-1/3 innings of work.
Ben Sheeter (0-1) took the loss for Tech, allowing four runs and four hits in 3-1/3 innings.
The two teams complete their two-game series in Atlanta on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. contest at Russ Chandler Stadium. Sophomore right-hander Rhett Parrott is slated to get the start for the Jackets.
