Six Named to Cross Country All-ACC Academic Teams

Feb. 9, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech cross country saw a total of six Yellow Jackets named to the men’s and women’s All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Cross Country teams as announced today by ACC Commissioner John Swofford.

To be eligible for consideration for academic all-ACC honors, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

“It’s a great honor for our student-athletes and a tribute to their hard work both in the classroom and in the athletic field,” said Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country head coach Alan Drosky. “And it’s also a tribute to our academic support team and the investment they make every day in our student-athlete’s success.”

Sophomore Amy Ruiz headlined the women’s honorees for Tech. The electrical engineering major led the Yellow Jackets in four meets during the 2016 campaign, including the ACC Championship in Cary, N.C. and the NCAA South Regional in Tallahassee, Fla.

Five men were named to the All-ACC Academic Team from Georgia Tech. Senior Alex Grady is a mechanical engineering major. He scored in every meet he raced during the 2016 season. Junior Nahom Solomon received the honor for the third time in his career, having also been named to the team following his freshman and sophomore campaigns. Solomon was consistently Tech’s top performer on the men’s side.

Junior Matt Munns joins Grady and Solomon on the team. It marks the second time the industrial engineering major has earned the honor. Sophomore Mitchell Sanders was also named to the team. The aerospace engineering major finished in the top five among the Jackets in every meet he raced last fall. Freshman Frank Pittman is one of four freshmen in the conference to earn the honor. Pittman earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors twice during the 2016 season.
