GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech senior center fielder Christy Jones has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.
Joining Jones on the Academic All-ACC team are freshman Lindsey Anderson, junior Shannon Bear, junior Kate Kuzma, senior Kristine Priebe, freshman Alysha Rudnik, junior Jessica Sinclair and senior Jessica Weaver. The eight selections were the most of any school.
This is the third straight year a Tech softball player has been named the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year as Jen Yee was in 2010 and Whitney Haller took home the honors in 2009.
To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his or her academic career.
A four-time All-ACC Academic Team selection, Jones led the league in stolen bases, tallying 33 on the season in 38 attempts. The centerfielder from Wichita, Kan., ranked 21st nationally in the category and was named to the All-ACC Second Team, marking her second consecutive all-conference selection. Jones finished her career third in school history in stolen bases with 95. In leading the Yellow Jackets to their third straight ACC regular season title and 10th consecutive NCAA Softball Championship appearance, she hit .342 for the season, which ranked third among her teammates and ninth in the league. Jones had 54 hits on the season with 32 runs. She finished the 2011 campaign with a 1.000 fielding percentage and 46 putouts. A mechanical engineering major, Jones was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Softball Second Team in May.
