CLEMSON, S.C. – Jarrod Schmidt tossed a complete game five-hitter to lead 12th-ranked Clemson (28-14, 10-4 ACC) to a 4-1 victory over seventh-ranked Georgia Tech (30-12, 9-8 ACC) on Saturday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium for the Tigers’ second straight win in the three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series.
Schmidt (5-3) went the distance for the first time of the season and limited the nation’s top-hitting offense one run on five hits. The right-hander issued one walk while striking out four, and he did not allow a Tech player to reach third base.
Tech starter Rhett Parrott (7-3) took the loss despite a solid effort. The right hander allowed four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six batters.
The Tigers broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth inning. After two were out, Ryan Riley hit a lazy fly ball to right field that Tech’s Jason Basil lost in the dusk sky and allowed Riley to reach third with a triple. A two-out RBI double from Russell Triplett gave Clemson a 1-0 lead.
Clemson took a 4-0 lead with three more runs in the seventh inning. Chad Coder led off with a single before moving to second on Riley’s sacrifice bunt. After Triplett singled, Coder came around to score on Steve Pyzik’s squeeze bunt. A RBI single from Kyle Frank and a bases loaded walk to Khalil Greene capped the scoring in the inning.
A solo homer from Schmidt, his 13th of the season, gave the Tigers a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Yellow Jackets’ Brian Prince belted his fifth home run of the season with one out in the top of the ninth inning to avoid Tech’s first back-to-back shutouts in the same season since 1957.
Triplett, playing in place of injured starting third baseman Jeff Baker, finished 3-for-4, while Casey Stone added two hits. Tech’s Matthew Boggs went 2-for-3 in a losing effort.
Tech, which has lost the first two games of the series to Clemson, has totaled just eight hits in the two games after entering the weekend with a NCAA best .352 batting average. The Yellow Jackets have had just one player advance past second base in the series.
Georgia Tech and Clemson will conclude the three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series on Sunday at 2 p.m. The games will be broadcast on WREK-Radio (91.1 FM in Atlanta) and on the internet at www.ramblinwreck.com.
