ATLANTA – Clifton Remole’s three-run homer highlighted a four run sixth inning and pitcher Andrew Kown worked six strong innings as fifth-ranked Georgia Tech (6-0) defeated visiting Villanova (3-3) on Sunday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium. The victory completed the Yellow Jackets’ three game series sweep of the Wildcats.
Making his first start of the year, Kown (1-0) dominated Villanova’s hitters for six innings. The right-hander struck out a career high 11 batters, including 10 looking, while allowing just one run on five hits and one walk.
Tech relievers Ryan Self, Nick Wagner, Ryan Turner and Jason Neighborgall held the Wildcats scoreless over the final three innings as the staff combined to strike out 16 in the game. Neighborgall earned his first career save by striking out the side in the ninth inning.
For the three-game series, Tech pitchers held Villanova to just three runs on 19 hits in 27 innings.
Adrian Petracca doubled and scored on Alan Day’s RBI single to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
The game remained 1-0 until the Yellow Jackets finally broke through for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Eric Patterson reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second base, Jeremy Slayden tied the game at 1-1 with a RBI single through the right side of the infield. Micah Owings followed with a double before Remole hit his first home run of the year, a three-run shot off reliever Mike Ciccotelli that gave the Yellow Jackets a 4-1 lead.
Remole, Slayden and Patterson each had two hits in the game, and Tech outhit Villanova 10-6. Day led the Wildcats with a perfect 3-for-3 afternoon.
Villanova starter Kevin Mulvey (1-1) pitched effectively but took the loss after surrendering three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings. Mulvey left the game with the score tied 1-1 in the sixth inning and two runners on base.
Georgia Tech takes the week off before traveling to Fullerton, Calif., next weekend for the Kia Baseball Bash featuring Southern California, Oklahoma and host Cal State-Fullerton. Tech opens the weekend on Friday at 5:30 p.m. (EST) against USC, then faces Cal State-Fullerton on Saturday at 10 p.m. (EST) and Oklahoma on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (EST).
