REMOLE LIFTS NO. 5 GEORGIA TECH OVER ETSU IN 10 INNINGS

March 5, 2002

Box Score

Atlanta – Freshman Clifton Remole’s one-out sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning broke a 5-5 tie and gave fifth-ranked Georgia Tech (10-1) a 6-5 win over visiting East Tennessee State (5-5) on Tuesday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.

With the score knotted at five, Matt Murton, who had three hits in the game, led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a double to left-center field. After a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, Jeremy Slayden put runners on first and third base with a single to right field. Remole then belted a 1-0 pitch to the right field wall to drive in Murton with the winning run.

Tech reliever Brian Burks (3-0) picked up the victory after tossing four perfect innings to close out the game. He retired all 12 batters he faced and struck out five.

The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on RBI groundouts from Remole and Wes Rynders. Tech stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning when Rynders drew a bases loaded walk and Matthew Boggs plated a run with an RBI groundout. An unearned run in the fifth inning made the score 5-0.

The Bucs tied the game with a five-run sixth inning, recording all five of their hits in the game in that frame. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run from Jeremy Terry, his first of the season. Caleb Moore drove in a run with a RBI groundout before Kirk Keithley tied the game with a two-out RBI single.

ETSU’s Donnie Sharp (1-2) took the loss, allowing one run in 0.2 innings. Neither starting pitcher figured into the decision, as Tech’s Jeff Watchko surrendered five runs in six innings, and ETSU’s Matt Hensley allowed five runs in 4.1 innings.

Georgia Tech will return to action when the Yellow Jackets host Winthrop for a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday at 4 p.m. at Russ Chandler Stadium. Live scoring for the game will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com.
