THE FLATS – No. 10 Georgia Tech baseball used a two-run homer from Kevin Parada – his sixth in the last eight days – to down Georgia State 4-2 on Tuesday night at the GSU Baseball Complex.
The Yellow Jackets (8-1) got outstanding pitching on the night, as RHP Marquis Grissom, Jr. (1-1) struck out two and allowed just one hit in the first two innings in the predetermined start before RHP John Medich dealt the next 3.0 innings, striking out three and surrendering one run. RHP Cole McNamee then pitched a clean two innings before LHP Joseph Mannelly allowed the final run.
RHP Dawson Brown closed the final 1.2 innings, inheriting two base runners, for his third save of the season, striking out three and not allowing a single hit.
Offensively, the Panthers (4-5) actually out-hit Georgia Tech 8-5, but the Jackets were able to hit when they needed to as Parada finished 3-for-4 and John Giesler had a sac fly RBI. Parada then drove in the fourth and final run by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.
Leading Georgia State was Max Ryerson, who went 3-for-4 with a double. RHP Camren Landry (0-2) received the loss, surrendering three unearned runs on four hits in six innings.
No. 10-ranked Georgia Tech will now return home for the start of Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate on Friday, March 4 against Georgia (6 p.m.). The teams will then shift to Athens, Ga. for Game 2 on Saturday (2 p.m.) before concluding the series at Coolray Field on Sunday (2 p.m.). Games 1 and 2 will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and WREK 91.1 FM.
