ATLANTA-Tech baseball standout Micah Owings and softball pitcher Erin Voeltz were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, May 3, 2004.
Owings, a sophomore from Gainesville, Ga., pitched Georgia Tech to a 6-1 victory at NC State in the opener of a doubleheader on Sunday. He carried a shutout into the eighth after allowing just three hits through the first seven innings. Owings earned a win in his second straight start, working seven-plus innings and allowing one run on five hits while walking two and striking out eight. Also working as the regular DH in the lineup, Owings went 4-for-8 with a RBI and run scored in the doubleheader sweep of the Wolfpack.
Voeltz, a senior from Westlake, Calif., pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout against Maryland helping Tech to a 1-0 win. She recorded seven strikeouts in the game on senior day. Voeltz has 15 wins on the season and a 0.96 ERA. Also, she graduated with high honors on Saturday, receiving her degree in Management.
