Feb. 17, 2002

Box Score

ATLANTA – Tyler Parker went 4-for-5 with four RBI and Georgia Tech used a school-record 11-run first inning as the ninth-ranked Yellow Jackets (5-0) defeated visiting Tennessee Tech (0-4), 17-3, on Sunday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium to complete a three-game series sweep of the Golden Eagles.

Georgia Tech starter Philip Perry (1-0), one of six Yellow Jacket pitchers in the game, picked up the win in his first start of the season after tossing four shutout innings and allowing just one hit. Mike Andreas, Kevin Guyette, Andrew Kown, Jordan Crews and Victor Menocal all made their debuts on the mound for Georgia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets exploded for 11 runs in the first inning, setting a school record for runs scored in an opening frame. Georgia Tech sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning, which was highlighted by a grand slam from Matt Murton, his second homer of the season. Parker belted a pair of doubles and drove in three runs in the inning, while Menocal added two singles.

Jason Perry hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season when he led off the third inning with a solo blast. Jeremy Slayden added his second homer of the year with a solo shot two batters later in the same inning.

Menocal went 3-for-5 in the game, while Perry added two hits in three at bats.

Georgia Tech improved to 5-0 to start the season for the first time since opening the 1997 season with 10 straight wins.

Tennessee Tech starter Bubbie Buzachero (0-1) took the loss after allowing 13 runs, only six of which were earned, in three innings. Casey Benjamin led the Golden Eagles with three hits in four at bats.

Georgia Tech will return to action when the Yellow Jackets host Wofford on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Russ Chandler Stadium.
