No. 4 Georgia Tech Baseball Hosts Georgia on Wednesday

ATLANTA–Fourth-ranked Georgia Tech (29-7, 16-2 ACC) hosts Georgia (20-15, 5-9 SEC) on Wednesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium in the first of three games between the two schools over the next eight days. First pitch is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be televised by CSS.

Tech is off to a fast start in conference play with sweeps of Duke, Wake Forest, NC State and Florida State, and series wins over Miami and Maryland. Tech had an ACC-record 25 straight regular season conference win streak snapped on Mar. 25 at Miami, but the Yellow Jackets have won 32 of their last 34 ACC games and have won 13 consecutive ACC weekend series.

Yellow Jacket head coach Danny Hall won his 505th (currently 513-218 in 12 years) game at Georgia Tech on Mar. 27 in Miami, eclipsing the previous school record of 504 wins held by current Miami head coach Jim Morris (504-244-1 record at Georgia Tech from 1982-1993).

For the year, Tech leads the ACC with a .344 team batting average, a .447 on base percentage and an average of 10.7 runs per game. The Yellow Jackets have scored at least nine runs in 27 of 36 games, reaching double figure scoring in 19 games.

Series Notes vs. Georgia

Georgia leads Georgia Tech, 186-141-2, in a series that dates to 1898. The Bulldogs hold a 106-49 advantage in games played in Athens, while the Yellow Jackets hold an 80-68-1 egde in games played in Atlanta. Tech and Georgia have played every year since 1946 when the series was suspended for three years during World War II.

The 329-game series is Tech’s longest against any opponent. The Yellow Jackets’ next longest series are 224 games against Auburn and 180 games against Clemson.

The Yellow Jackets have won two straight games at Foley Field, while the Bulldogs have won four straight at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Tech has had the upper hand in recent years, posting a 39-25 record against Georgia since 1988.

Last year, the Yellow Jackets won two of three games during the regular season before the Bulldogs won two games in the NCAA Atlanta Super Regional. Tech won 4-3 in Athens on Mar. 24, Georgia won 6-5 in Atlanta on Apr. 14, and Tech won 12-5 at Turner Field on May 11. The Bulldogs swept two games in the Super Regional, 7-5 and 5-3.

Tech is 26-18 against Georgia under head coach Danny Hall.

STREAKING IN THE ACC

Georgia Tech has enjoyed unprecedented success within the Atlantic Coast Conference over the last two seasons, winning the ACC regular season title in 2004 with an 18-5 league record, and racing out to first place in the ACC standings in 2005 with a 16-2 mark.

Tech had a conference-record 25-game ACC win streak snapped on Mar. 25 at Miami, but the Yellow Jackets have won 32 of their last 34 ACC games.

The Yellow Jackets have won 13 straight ACC series overall, and have won 19 of their last 20 ACC home games. Tech has won seven straight ACC series on the road and is 18-2 in its last 20 ACC road games.

Georgia Tech has streaked out to a 9-0 record in ACC play to start the 2005 season, sweeping series against Duke, Wake Forest and NC State. Tech’s 9-0 record is the second best conference start since joining the ACC in 1980.

“5” – THE MAGIC NUMBER

Georgia Tech went 33-2 in 2004 when the Yellow Jackets allow five runs or less. Tech is 17-2 when allowing five runs or less in 2005.

Since the arrival of pitching coach Bobby Moranda prior to the 2002 season, the Yellow Jackets are 122-7 when allowing five runs or less. Tech went 34-2 in 2003 and 38-2 in 2002 when allowing five runs or less. When allowing six or more runs, the Yellow Jackets are 42-53 since 2002, including an 12-5 mark in 2005.

THE BROOM

Georgia Tech swept each of the last five Atlantic Coast Conference series during the 2004 season, and the Yellow Jackets extended the streak to eight with three-game sweeps of Duke, Wake Forest and NC State to start the 2005 season. Tech has also swept Florida State this season.

The Yellow Jackets have swept 55 weekend series since the conference adopted the current three-game round-robin format in 1987. Since 1987 Tech has won 97 of 146 (.664) ACC series, including seven of eight series in 2004 and all six series in 2005.

VERSUS THE STATE OF GEORGIA

Georgia Tech is 5-1 against teams from the state of Georgia in 2005, posting a 4-0 record vs. Georgia Southern and a 1-1 mark vs. Georgia State. Since 1999, Georgia Tech owns a 63-16 (.797) record against its in-state foes. The Yellow Jackets are 105-33 (.761) against teams from Georgia in 12 years under head coach Danny Hall.
