ATLANTA – Ryan Turner pitched six strong innings and Matt Wieters went 4-for-4 with a home run and five RBI to lead No. 4 Georgia Tech (30-7) to a 12-2 win over Georgia (20-16) on Wednesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The 10-run margin of victory was Tech’s largest in the series since a 21-4 win in 1998.
Turner (4-1) worked six innings and held the Bulldogs to one run on four hits while striking out five batters. The bullpen duo of Tim Gustafson and Tim Ladd worked three innings and allowed just one run.
Wieters recorded his fourth game with at least four hits, finishing with a home run, double and two singles. He raised his batting average to a team-leading .421 while driving in five runs.
Tyler Greene had three hits, including a home run, Steven Blackwood added three hits and Jeff Kindel drove in three runs. The Yellow Jackets outhit the Bulldogs, 14-7.
Tech, which averages an ACC-leading 10.7 runs per game, scored in double figures for the 20th time in 2005. The Yellow Jackets have scored nine or more runs in 28 of 37 games this season.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a RBI single from Kyle Keen. The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run from Greene, his seventh of the season, and took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a solo home run from Wieters, his sixth of the year.
Tech added two runs off reliever Rip Warren in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 4-1. An infield single and two hit batters loaded the bases before Wieters delivered a two-out, two-run single.
The Yellow Jackets scored four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to break the game open and extend the lead to 12-1. Kindel had a two-run double and Wes Hodges added a RBI double in the seventh, while a two-run double from Wieters highlighted the eighth inning.
Georgia starter Mickey Westphal (2-1) pitched well but took the loss after allowing two runs in four innings.
The Yellow Jackets and Bulldogs will play two more games as part of the three-game regular season series. Tech and Georgia meet next Tuesday at Turner Field and on Wednesday in Athens.
Georgia Tech returns to Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend in a three game series at Virginia, beginning on Friday at 7 p.m.
