No. 3 Tech Baseball Hosts Kennesaw State in Weekend Series

ATLANTA–Third-ranked Georgia Tech (3-0) host Kennesaw State (1-1) for a three-game series this weekend at Russ Chandler Stadium. Gametimes are 4 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The Yellow Jackets are off to a 3-0 start in 2006 with wins over in-state foes Georgia Southern and Georgia State. The Owls defeated Washington State and dropped a contest to Missouri in their Division I debut last weekend.

Georgia Tech has scored 39 runs in its first three games of the season, batting .330 as a team and averaging 13 runs per game. Tech led the ACC and ranked second nationally with a .333 batting average in 2005. Tech’s offense has been led by 1B Whit Robbins (.500-2-12), RF Jeff Kindel (.462-1-6), 3B Wes Hodges (.429-1-5), and C/DH Matt Wieters (.357-0-4).

Georgia Tech vs. Kennesaw State
Georgia Tech and Kennesaw state have met on two previous occasions, both coming before the Owls joined Division I. The Yellow Jackets won 19-5 in 1987. The Owls claimed a 12-2 victory in 1989. Both games were played at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Swinging the Big Sticks
The Yellow Jackets led the ACC with a .319 team batting average during the 2004 season and a .333 team average in 2005. Tech has hit over .300 as a team in 19 of the last 21 years, and has averaged at least seven runs per game every year since 1981. Tech has led the ACC in batting in six years (1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005) under Danny Hall.

The Jackets are batting .330 in their first three games of 2006 against Georgia Southern and Georgia State. Tech has scored 39 runs in three games.

Georgia Tech is 3-0 against teams from the state of Georgia in 2006, posting a 2-0 record vs. Georgia Southern and a 1-0 record vs. Georgia State. Since 1999, Georgia Tech owns a 66-17 (.795) record against its in-state foes. The Yellow Jackets are 109-34 (.762) against teams from Georgia in 13 years under head coach Danny Hall.

Tech Picked Second in ACC Preseason Poll
The Atlantic Coast Conference’s 12 head coaches selected Georgia Tech to finish second in the league’s annual preseason poll. The Yellow Jackets finished first in the league race last year with a 22-8 conference mark.

Clemson was the top pick with eight first place votes and a total of 139 points, while Georgia Tech was second with two first place votes and 129 points. North Carolina was third with two first place votes and 126 points.

Florida State (107), Miami (95), NC State (86), Virginia (72), Wake Forest (59), Boston College (41), Maryland (38), Virginia Tech (30) and Duke (15) rounded out the poll.
