March 1, 2003

Box Score

ATLANTA – First baseman Clifton Remole went 3-for-3 and Mike Nickeas drove in two runs to lead top-ranked Georgia Tech (8-0) to a 4-2 win over visiting George Washington (4-3) on Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium. The win was the Yellow Jackets’ second straight victory over the Colonials in the first two days of a three-game series.

Georgia Tech’s eight game winning streak to open 2003 is the fifth best mark to start a season. The Yellow Jackets set a school record with a 16-0 start in 1987.

After the Colonials took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single from Tony Dokoupil, the Yellow Jackets immediately answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Jeremy Slayden led off the inning with his second home run of the season, before Nickeas belted a two-run double down the left field line to give Tech a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Matt Murton singled, stole second base and then took third base on a single from Remole. Murton, who went 2-for-4 in the game, came around to score on a groundout from Nickeas to make the score 4-1.

Tech starter Chris Goodman (1-0) earned the win, holding the Colonials to one run on five hits in 5.1 innings. Brian Burks picked up his second save of the season after allowing one unearned run over the final 3.1 innings of the game.

George Washington starter Greg Conden (2-1) took the loss despite a solid effort, allowing four runs on seven hits in seven innings while striking out seven batters.

Georgia Tech and George Washington will conclude the series on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.. Live statistics for the game will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com, while the contest will be carried on WREK-Radio (91.1 FM) in Atlanta.
