No. 1 Tech Baseball Hosts Alumni Game On Saturday

Feb. 4, 2003

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s top-ranked baseball team will play its annual Alumni Game on Saturday at 12 noon at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The nine-inning game will feature the current Yellow Jackets against former Tech players. Admission to the game is free and it will be broadcast in the Atlanta area on WREK-Radio (91.1 FM).

Saturday’s Alumni Game will be the first chance for fans to watch the 2003 edition of the Yellow Jackets, who begin the season with a No. 1 national ranking from Baseball America magazine. Tech returns 22 letterwinners from the 2002 team that posted a school-record 52 victories and advanced to the College World Series.

“The Alumni Game is a chance to play someone other than ourselves, but more than that it is a fun atmosphere,” said Georgia Tech head coach Danny Hall, who has a 396-172 record in nine previous years on the Flats. “The emphasis on the day is to get the alumni back to campus and give them a chance to run around the stadium and meet the current team. We look forward to this event every year to see our alumni again.”

The Yellow Jackets will start their ace, Kyle Bakker, who went 13-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 2002, although several pitchers on the Tech staff will see action in the game. The alumni team, coached by former Tech All-America Randy Carroll and James Beavers, will send 11-year Major League veteran Jim Poole to the mound.

“The game gives us an idea of what we can expect once the season starts for real next week at Georgia Southern,” said Hall. “Kyle Bakker will get the start and that puts him on track to start the season opener. We will throw some other guys as well, and this gives us one final tune up before we open the season.”

The day of festivities will continue on Saturday evening, when the Tech baseball program hosts its annual benefit dinner. The event, which includes a silent auction and a keynote address from former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel at the Cobb Galleria Centre.

For more information on the benefit dinner, contact the Georgia Tech marketing office at (404) 894-4400.
