ATLANTA (Feb. 29) – Top-ranked Georgia Tech’s Kris Mikkelsen and Matt Kuchar each shot under par Tuesday to lead Tech to its second straight victory this spring in the San Juan Shoot Out in Rio Mar, P.R. The Yellow Jackets finished with an 11-under-par 284-282-287-853 at the 6,945-yard, par 72 Rio Mar Country Club to defeat Northwestern by four strokes to win their third tournament of season.
Mikkelsen, a sophomore from Woodstock, Ga., fired a final-day 69 to pace Tech and finish tied-for-eighth with a two-under-par 72-73-69-214. Kuchar, a senior from Lake Mary, Fla., was the top Tech finisher as he tied for fourth at four-under-par with a 73-68-71-212. His second-day 68 cemented the Tech lead, which gave Tech the opportunity to win the San Juan Shoot Out after finishing second each of the last two years.
Junior Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.), who led after the first two days, slipped to a tie for eighth after finishing with a 77. He carded a 67-70-77-214 to finish two under par and register his seventh top 10 finish this year. Redshirt-freshman Troy Matteson (Austin, Texas) placed29th after shooting a four-over-par 75-71-74-220, while senior Carlton Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.) ended 35th at 72-77-73-222.
Tech, ranked No. 1 in the Golfweek computer ranking that is administered by the Jeff Sagarin system, also has won the Carpet Capital Collegiate and the Waikoloa Intercollegiate this year, in addition to finishing second at the Golf World Invitational. The win marked the first time this year that Tech had three individuals finish together in the top 10 of the individual standings.
The Jackets will next be in action March 10-12 at the Golf Digest Intercollegiate in Las Vegas, Nev.
