McGuire Shines on Hill in Gold Intrasquad Win

Oct. 16, 2007

ATLANTA – Freshman Deck McGuire allowed just one hit through five innings, while classmate Thomas Nichols and junior Michael Klindt drove in two runs each to lead the Gold team over the White, 8-2, Tuesday in game 1 of Georgia Tech’s Intrasquad World Series at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Box score

McGuire, a 6-6 righthander from Richmond, Va., escaped his only jam in the second inning when right fielder Chris House gunned down Luke Murton at home after a Chase Burnette single, then struck out Brandon Cumpton to end the inning. McGuire had walked Murton and Patrick Long to start the frame, then fanned Curtis Dupart before giving up the single to Burnette.

McGuire then retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced. One batter reached on an error and was erased on a double-play in the fourth.

The Gold team scratched for two runs in the first off White starter David Duncan. Chris House singled, and Jeff Ussery walked to start the inning, then both came around to score on Nichols’ two-out single.

Duncan, the losing pitcher (5 innings, 6 hits, 4 strikeouts), shut out the Gold team over the next four innings before giving way to the bullpen, which allowed three unearned runs in the sixth and three more runs in the seventh. Shortstop Ryan Tinkoff committed two errors in the sixth, and the Gold team capitalized with run-scoring singles from Klindt and Ussery against pitcher Michael Hutts.

Jason Haniger, Tony Plagman and Nichols opened the seventh with singles against Brad Rulon, and all three scored with the help of two outfield errors and another RBI single from Simonds.

The White team got on the board in the eighth and final frame against Chris Hicks, scoring two runs with a single by Ryan Tinkoff, a double by Jay Danztler and a single by Jason Garofalo.

Game 2 is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday at Russ Chandler Stadium. Admission is free.
