“It’s not the way we wanted to start the year, but I believe we did some good things at times,” head coach Shelly Hoerner said. “We have a lot to work on including our communication on the field.  It’s early on, and we just have to keep improving and working as a team.”

How It Happened
North Carolina scored three runs on three hits in the opening frame to take a quick 3-0 lead. The Tar Heels extended their lead to 7-0 thanks to a two-run home run in the third and two runs in the fifth.

The Jackets’ bats warmed up in the fifth inning. Freshman Karissa Arnold led off the inning with an infield single and freshman Crosby Huckabay followed with an outfield single.

With runners on the corners and no outs, Draven Sonnon connected for an RBI-single through the right side to bring in Arnold.

Tech tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Katie Krzus and Rebecca Prairie recorded back-to-back singles, and Rachael Bonitatibus came in to run for Prairie. Arnold came up with an RBI-single and Crosby Huckabay was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Sonnon grounded into a double play, but it allowed Bonitatibus to score to give Tech the three runs.

Brooke Barfield (0-3) earned the start, but she was pinned with the loss after allowing five runs in three innings with four strikeouts. Jenna Goodrich pitched the remaining four innings with three strikeouts.

UNC’s Kendra Lynch (1-1) earned the win and Sydney Matzko was credited with a save.
