WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Andrew Kown pitched a complete game four-hitter while Micah Owings and Wes Hodges hit home runs to lead Georgia Tech (13-10, 2-4 ACC) to a 9-2 win over Wake Forest (11-9, 1-2 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at Gene Hooks Stadium. The Yellow Jackets won two of three games from the Demon Deacons in the weekend series.
Kown (3-1) fired the first complete game of his career, holding the Demon Deacons to two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight. After allowing two runs in the first inning, Kown retired 20 consecutive batters before finally allowing a two-out walk in the seventh inning. Kown, who threw 115 pitches including 73 strikes, allowed just two runners to advance past first base after the first inning.
Mike Nickeas paced the Tech offense with a 4-for-5 afternoon while Hodges went 3-for-4. Tyler Greene and Steven Blackwood added two hits apiece.
A two-run homer from Ben Ingold, his third of the year, staked the Demon Deacons to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Tech’s Brandon Boggs walked and scored on Clifton Remole’s RBI groundout to make the score 2-1 in the top of the second inning.
The Yellow Jackets took a 3-2 lead when Owings hit his team-leading sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot over the right field fence.
Tech erupted for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take control of the game, 8-2. The Yellow Jackets sent nine batters to the plate in an inning that was highlighted by a RBI double from Greene and a RBI single from Blackwood. The Demon Deacons helped the cause with three balks, two wild pitches, a passed ball and an error.
Hodges hit a solo home run, his third of the season, to extend the lead to 9-2 in the top of the eighth inning.
Wake Forest starter Brian Bach (2-4), who allowed six runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings, took the loss.
