KeShun Freeman Up for 2015 Wuerffel Trophy

July 15, 2015

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. – Georgia Tech sophomore defensive end KeShun Freeman is among 80 players named to the 2015 Wuerffel Trophy Watch List announced Wednesday.

The Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach Florida. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

The LaGrange, Ga., native played in all 14 games as a rookie, making 12 consecutive starts at defensive end. He led all defensive linemen with 54 tackles, while leading the Jackets’ defense with 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He named ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week on Nov. 3, 2014, after posting five tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and one blocked kick in a win over Virginia. He was recognized as one of the nation’s best freshmen in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), garnering Freshman All-America honors by 247Sports, ESPN.com, Phil Steele, and USA TODAY.

Freeman has volunteered countless hours with the Georgia Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board through events such as the Special Olympics and delivering Valentine’s Day cards to the Children’s Hospital of Atlanta as part of #CHOAHeartStrong. He also volunteered as a volunteer for the Girls on the Run Spring 5K, Chick-fil-A Football Camp, and traveled with other Tech student-athletes in May for a service trip to the Dominican Republic.

He is majoring in business administration with a minor in pre-health. Freeman’s end goal is to enroll in medical school to become a pediatric anesthesiologist.

The Atlantic Coast Conference led all conferences with 15 players appearing on the 2015 watch list. Voting for the Wuerffel Trophy is performed by a National Selection Committee that includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients.

Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 3 and finalists will be announced on November 24. Formal announcement of the winner will be on December 8 at the National Football Foundation’s press conference in New York City.

The presentation of the 2015 Wuerffel Trophy will occur Feb. 12, 2016, at the 47th Annual All Sports Association Awards Banquet Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
