THE FLATS – Tying the longest home game by innings at 14, No. 7 Georgia Tech used a bunt RBI single from Bradley Frye and an RBI single from Tres Gonzalez to complete the sweep of Virginia Tech on Sunday at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (13-3, 3-0 ACC) played 23 innings in total on the day, having to play a doubleheader due to weather on Saturday. Georgia Tech won the opening game handily 12-6 before winning the wild conclusion 7-6.
Game 1: Georgia Tech 12, Virginia Tech 6
Georgia Tech poured on the offense with a six-run second inning to jump out early. The Hokies (10-4, 0-3 ACC) battled back, but the Jackets scored six more runs over its final three innings at the plate to secure the series.
Kevin Parada remained hot, leading six multi-hit Yellow Jackets with a 3-for-4 day that featured a double, a homer and five RBI. Chandler Simpson finished with three hits as well, while Gonzalez had a double and a three-RBI single. Stephen Reid, Andrew Jenkins and Colin Hall all chipped in two hits apiece as well, while Tim Borden II launched his fourth home run of the season.
After starter RHP Zach Maxwell scattered four hits for four runs in the opening two innings, LHP Cody Carwile (2-0) was once again terrific, providing a career-long 4.0 shutdown innings of one-hit ball with no walks for his second decision. Knowing another game was ahead of Georgia Tech, LHP Sam Crawford then pitched in three huge innings for his first save of the season to save the bullpen.
Game 2: Georgia Tech 7, Virginia Tech 6 (14 innings)
In the no-doubt marathon, seventh-ranked Georgia Tech displayed its pitching depth, using eight arms over the 14 innings. Starter RHP Marquis Grissom, Jr. was effective to start the first 3.2 innings, allowing just one run on two hits, before LHP Dalton Smith provided 2.1 one-hit innings.
Once into extra innings, LHP Josiah Siegel dealt 0.2 innings clean before surrendering a double. RHP Dawson Brown then shut down the threat and pitched a hitless 1.1 innings through the 11th innings.
True freshmen pitchers carried the Jackets the rest of the way with LHP Camron Hill pitching 0.2 innings with just a walk and RHP Logan McGuire (1-0) pitching 2.1 high-pressure innings, allowing just one run on two hits, no walks and punching out four to earn his first collegiate decision.
At the plate, Jenkins once again was hot, recording three hits and a home run. Borden also added three hits with true freshman Bradley Frye, Gonzalez, Jack Rubenstein and Simpson getting two hits on the night.
The Yellow Jackets continue its eight-game homestand when it hosts Jackson State in a two-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 15-16. First pitches for both days are set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and WREK 91.1 FM.
