Jackets Swarm Bears, 11-3

MACON, Ga. – Georgia Tech softball (18-18, 2-10 ACC) outmatched Mercer (12-24, 3-3 ASUN) in an 11-3 victory on Tuesday night at Sikes Field. The Yellow Jackets tied a season-high 13 hits and picked up the second-most runs scored on the year with 11 on the way to the dominant triumph.

Senior hurler Chandler Dennis (11-5) controlled the game from the circle as she tossed her fourth complete game of the season. The starter in the circle equaled her season best of eight strikeouts in seven innings of work to receive the win.

At the plate, the White and Gold fielded a balanced attack as four Yellow Jackets barreled multiple hits, seven picked up at least one RBI and eight scored a run or more. Junior first baseman Abby Hughes did some damage on her own, belting a solo bomb for her third career home run.  Junior third baseman Mallorie Black was the most efficient Jacket with her swings, swatting a double as she went 2-for-3 with a couple of RBI. Other multi-hit Tech batters included senior catcher Emma Kauf (2-for-4, 1 RBI, 2 R), sophomore designated player Emma Minghini (2-for-5, 1 2b, 1 RBI, 1 R) and sophomore left fielder Auburn Dupree (2-for-3, 1 R).

How it Happened

Georgia Tech got rolling in its first opportunity at the plate, putting up a three spot in the first. With a pair on following back-to-back walks, Black started a two-out rally by stealing third and making her way home on an errant throw to get the Yellow Jackets on the board. Soon after, Minghini put the ball in play to score junior right fielder Sara Beth Allen. Junior shortstop Jin Sileo then bunted an infield single to score Hughes for a 3-0 lead.

The Jackets came back with two more in the second as sophomore utility player Madison Dobbins ran home on a double steal before Minghini’s RBI single pushed Tech further in front, 5-0.

In the third, sophomore center fielder Ella Edgmon led off the inning with a single and stole her way into scoring position, setting up an RBI double off the bat of Black. Mercer fired back in the bottom of the frame, knocking a three-run shot to cut the lead in half, 6-3.

The White and Gold continued to press on in the fourth as Sileo drew a leadoff walk and Dupree singled, both moving into scoring position on a sac bunt. A sac fly by Dobbins would bring in Sileo, and back-to-back RBI singles courtesy of Kauf and Black put Tech on top, 9-3.

Hughes would hammer her solo dinger in the fifth, and sophomore second baseman Grace Connelly pinch hit an RBI single in the seventh, adding a pair of security runs before Dennis closed out the contest for an 11-3 road win.
