Jackets Succeed On Day One Of Clemson Invite

CLEMSON, S.C. – After day one of competition at the Clemson Invitational, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams ended with 10 top-5 finishes including a first place showing in the triple jump by Omar Morrison.

Morrison notched the victory with a launch of 15.15 meters while Jonathan Gardner rounded out the top-three with a jump of 14.45 meters in the event. On the women’s side of things, Julienne McKee earned a second place showing with a distance of 12.09 meters.

Perron Jones did well on the day placing second in the preliminary heats of the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.85 seconds. Jones shaved .06 seconds off of his preliminary time to earn a second place finish in the finals.

Melanie Akwule, who recorded a 19th place showing in the 60 meter dash, took seventh in the 60 meter hurdles prelims with a time of 8.64 finishing eighth overall in the finals, crossing the line in 8.62.

Leslie Njoku earned a top-5 spot in the 300-meter dash coming across in 40.02 while Doug Black, Obiandu Igwe and Niall Longobardi went 3, 5, 6 in the 5000 meter run with times of 16:16.65, 16:17.49 and 16:19.76 respectively.

The Jackets will round out the meet on Saturday as things kick off with the field events at 11 a.m.
