Jackets Split Doubleheader with DePaul

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (8-7) split with DePaul (12-4) in Friday’s doubleheader at Mewborn Field, taking the first game with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th, 2-1 before falling in game two, 8-2.

Game 1, Georgia Tech 2, DePaul 1 (10)
With senior Emily Anderson in the circle , the Jackets held the Blue Demons through the first two innings. DePaul struck first in the third. The score knotted at 0-0, DePaul led off the third with a home run to left field to take the first lead at 1-0.

The Jackets started out slow, but responded in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Draven Sonnon doubled, and advanced to second on passed ball. Freshman Lilly Hooper singled to right field, moving Sonnon to third. Senior Kelsey Chisholm doubled to center field, plating Sonnon to tie the score at 1-1.

Going deep into extra innings with the score at 1-1, in the bottom of the 10th inning with one out on the board, junior Kaylee Ellebracht stepped up to the plate and took the game for the Jackets with a walk-off home run to left field, sealing the win at 2-1.

Anderson pitched all 10 innings for the Jackets and came away with the win, her sixth of the season.

Game 2 DePaul 8, Georgia Tech 2
DePaul got on the board first again in game two. The Blue Demons plated two in the top of the first to take the early edge. Freshman Naomi Dickerson earned the start in the circle for the Jackets.

Tech came within one score in the third. With two outs, freshman Cameron Stanford reached on a walk. Sonnon singled through the left side to advance Stanford to second. Hooper took a pitch to the body to load the bases. Junior Katie Krzus hit an infield single, scoring Stanford to bring the tally to 2-1.

The Jackets tied the game in the fourth. Ellebracht singled up the middle to get on base and freshman Jaydra von Behren took her place on first as a pinch runner. Freshman Breanna Roper walked, advancing von Behren to second. A double off the bat of Stanford brought in von Behren to even the score at 2-2.

Stanford came into the circle in the fifth, giving up a hit and allowing one run before sophomore Brooke Barfield took over midway through the sixth with the bases loaded. The Blue Demons put up a total of four runs in the sixth to take the lead at 6-2. After DePaul added two more runs in the top of the seventh, the Jackets were unable to overcome the deficit, falling 8-2 in game two. Stanford was given the loss for the game.

Up next:
The Jackets continues play in the I-75 Challenge tomorrow, Saturday, March 3, hosting a doubleheader with UConn starting at 1 p.m. at Mewborn Field. Parking for the game is available in Family Housing due to other events on campus.
