THE FLATS – Georgia Tech outdoor track and field will head to Florida for spring break as it competes in the Florida State Relays on Friday, March 22.
The Yellow Jackets will join Florida State, No. 4 Florida, Southern Miss and No. 18 Auburn, as well as Dartmouth and Liberty in the one-day meet. The field events begin at 9 a.m. with discus and pole vault following at noon and 12:30 p.m., respectively. Running events will launch at 1:30 p.m. with the 110 and 100m hurdles, followed by the 800 and 4×100 relay.
Georgia Tech is coming off a strong opening weekend where numerous personal records were set, as well as both the male and female school record in the 2000 steeplechase.
For their efforts, Nahom Solomon and Jeanine Williams were named ACC Performers of the Week after both posted the second-fastest times in the nation in their respective events. Solomon ran a career-fast 3:44.28 in the 1500m to take second among collegeiate student-athletes, while Williams won the 100m hurdles with a 13.19.
Maurice Simpson also had a good start, running the fourth-fastest time in the ACC in the 100m (10.80) and 200m (21.55). Benjamin Jean led the conference in 400m times, running a 46.55, while Daniel Pietsch was second in the ACC with a 46.59 time. Freshman Nicole Fegans ran the second-fastest time in the 1500m when she turned in a 4:34.54 performance while Marinice Bauman ranked third in the 400m hurdles.
In the field, William Solomon recorded a leap of 7.40m in the long jump and Preston Smith lept to a mark of 15.48m in the triple jump. Anna Hightower and Ksenia Novikova both had the second-highest clearance in the pole vault, reaching a mark of 3.85m.
