THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s tennis posted a successful day of competition across the nation on Friday. Playing in the quarterfinals out west in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones picked up their third win in California, while the Jackets also recorded four wins in Louisiana at the Tiger Fall Classic.
With a spot in the semifinals on the line in Palm Desert, Calif., Tech’s No. 3 preseason ranked duo of Hourigan/Jones handled Georgia’s Mariana Gould/Katarina Jokic in the quarterfinals. The Jackets did not drop a game in the first set, ousting the Lady Bulldogs, 6-0, before pocketing the second set, 6-4, for a straight-set victory.
Hourigan/Jones will face Alexa Bortles/Arianna Hartono of Ole Miss in the semifinals on Saturday. For complete results and schedule of play of Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, please visit the tournament page.
Meanwhile, on the East Coast in Louisiana, the Jackets picked up three singles wins and a doubles win in the Tiger Fall Classic. Tech opened the tournament with doubles play against Kansas. Tech’s tandem of Johnnise Renaud/Ida Jarlskog captured a 6-3 win over Janet Koch/Maria Ribes.
The Jackets took on Princeton in singles play following doubles. Renaud grabbed her second victory of the day with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Katrine Steffenson, while Jarlskog also pocketed a victory, defeating Nicole Kalhorn, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Rounding out the wins for Tech, sophomore Nami Otsuka edged Tiffany Chen, 6-4, 6-3.
Saturday’s action at the Tiger Fall Classic will feature Tech taking on LSU in doubles and Princeton in singles.
