THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis hosts its annual MLK Invitational at Byers Tennis Complex this weekend, beginning on Saturday, Jan. 13 and concluding on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 15.
The Yellow Jackets (2-0) welcome No. 16 Illinois, No. 23 Columbia and No. 4 Georgia to The Flats and will play each day at 2 p.m. The other teams will face off at 9 a.m. each day.
Schedule of Play:
Saturday:
- 9 a.m. – Columbia vs. Georgia
- 2 p.m. – Georgia Tech vs. Illinois
Sunday:
- 9 a.m. – Georgia vs. Illinois
- 2 p.m. – Georgia Tech vs. Columbia
Monday:
- 9 a.m. – Illinois vs. Columbia
- 2 p.m. – Georgia Tech vs. Georgia
Tech is coming off of sweeping its doubleheader against The Citadel on Tuesday, refusing to concede a singles or doubles match all day with 7-0 wins in both.
In doubles, the tandems of Carlos Divar and Michael Kay at No. 1 and Andrew Li and Chris Yun at No. 2 impressived with quick victories while Elijah Melendez and freshman Brandon Freestone won handily in the first match while Melendez teamed with Chris Yun in the second match to equal success.
Tech looked strong at the No. 1 and 2 in singles action with Carlos Divar starting as expected at the 1. Andrew Li returned to the court for the first time this season and won his lone singles match of the night 6-0, 6-1. Chris Yun and brother Daniel Yun also found success in singles, with D. Yun battling in a thriller that went to a 6-all tiebreak. After landing at a 6-6 tie, D. Yun rattled off four-straight points to win the set and match.
Seniors Melendez and Kay led by example, both going 2-0 on the day on their respective courts.
