THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis is back in action as it hosts the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. Play is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on Friday Oct. 7 and continue through the weekend.
Team Update: The squad is back after Carlos Benito and Christopher Eubanks traveled to Tulsa, Okla. for the Saint Francis Health Systems ITA All-Americans earlier in the week. The team has competed in one other tournament this fall season, the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Georgia. Doubles pairing Michael Kay and Daniel Yun advanced to the semifinals of the division I doubles draw. Freshman Chris Yun won two matches at the tournament, including his first as a Yellow Jacket.
Singles Update: Andrew Li will take on Andrew Schafer (South Carolina) Friday morning. Michael Kay will face Furman’s Andrew Steryous at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Cole Fiegel will face Florida’s Stephen Madonia. Chris Yun will hit the courts against Steven Karl (Tennessee) at 11:30 a.m. Daniel Yun and Phillip Gresk will both be back in action this weekend. Elijah Melendez will return for his 2016-17 debut to play Miami’s Kevin Bondar.
Doubles Update: Michael Kay and Daniel Yun will team up again after advancing to the semifinals of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in September. The Jackets will debut two new doubles pairings at the tournament with Gresk and Fiegel matching up and Andrew Li and Chris Yun hitting the courts together.
Head coach Kenny Thorne says: “The Georgia Tech Invitational is stronger than it has been in a while. A lot of quality teams have sent some of their better players. We will have three strong draws and each player will get four singles matches and three doubles matches. We need the matches and the goal is to always find a way to win your draw. This is a great opportunity for our guys to take a step forward. If they stumble then they have opportunities in this format to correct and still move forward. It will be interesting to see everyone’s attitude and effort throughout the weekend.”
The field: Nine Division I programs will have players on the courts of the Ken Byers Tennis Complex this weekend. In-state rival Georgia will have representatives as well as Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Auburn, South Carolina, Furman and Florida. Atlantic Coast Conference foe Miami will have four players entered.
The tournament format: The tournament features three draws. Each player will play four singles matches and three doubles matches. One round of singles and one round of doubles will be played on Friday. Saturday, there will be one round of doubles and two rounds of singles. On Sunday, play will conclude with one round of doubles and one round of singles.
