Jackets Fall To Washington In NCAA Opener

May 31, 2014

Box Score

OXFORD, Miss. – Washington’s Tyler Davis went the distance Saturday afternoon and pitched the Huskies past Georgia Tech, 8-0, in first game of the NCAA Oxford Regional at Ole Miss’s Swayze Field.

Rookies Ryan Peurifoy and Brandon Gold each had hits for the Yellow Jackets (36-26), who will play either Ole Miss or Jacksonville State in an elimination game Sunday at 11 a.m. CT (12 p.m. ET) on ESPN3.

Davis, who was bolstered with an early 1-0 in the first inning, limited the Jackets to just four hits in the game. The righty fanned eight against no walks and improved to 11-2. He entered the regional with the Pac 12’s fourth-best ERA of 1.75 ERA in 97.2 innings.

The Huskies (40-15-1) used some small ball to manufacture the game’s first run. Leadoff man Braden Bishop was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, swiped third and scored thanks to Austin Rei’s RBI single through the left side.

Davis got the cushion he needed thanks to a four-run, four-hit inning by the Huskies in the fourth – the big blow being a two-out, two-run single from Bishop that made it 5-0. All of UW’s damage came with two outs.

Bishop, who reached base all five times, was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Brandon Berry also had three hits for the Huskies.

Junior Josh Heddinger absorbed the loss (4-5), fanning six but allowing eight hits and five runs in 5.2 innings. Rookies Zac Ryan and Ben Schniederjans brought it home for Tech.

The Yellow Jackets turned two more double plays in Saturday’s game, extending their school record and NCAA lead to 75. A.J. Murray and Matt Gonzalez recorded the team’s other hits.
