NORMAN, Okla. – In the opening day of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, Georgia Tech men’s tennis was unable down No. 16 Illinois, dropping a 4-0 decision on Saturday afternoon at Headington Tennis Center.
The Yellow Jackets (3-2) were able to grab a victory at the No. 1 doubles to start the day as Carlos Divar and Michael Kay continue their strong year as a tandem. Divar/Kay downed the Illini’s (1-0) Vuk Budic and Aleks Vukic, 6-4.
Illinois would take the No. 2 and 3 spots as Daniel Yun and Elijah Melendez fell 6-2 to Zeke Clark and Aleks Kovacevic while Phillip Gresk and Andrew Li fell the team of Alex Brown/Caleb Chakravarthi.
In singles, Kovacevic downed Chris Yun at the No. 4 position, 6-3, 6-4, before Melendez fell at the No. 2 to Aron Hiltzik, 6-4, 6-3. At the No. 6, Kay was unable to take Chakravarthi, dropping a 6-4, 6-1 decision to give 16th-ranked Illinois match point.
Georgia Tech stays in Oklahoma for the conclusion of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets will play either Northwestern or Oklahoma, depending on the outcome of their Day 1 match.
