CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Two home runs from Andrew Jenkins wouldn’t be enough as No. 21 Georgia Tech baseball fell 13-9 to No. 2 Virginia on Saturday afternoon at Disharoon Park.
The Yellow Jackets (17-10, 5-6 ACC) struggled early on the mound, surrendering six runs through the first four innings before a seven-run sixth put the game out of reach. Tech used six pitchers on the day with starter LHP Cody Carwile (2-2) going just 1.2 innings and allowing four runs on two hits. LHP Joseph Mannelly closed the day with 2.0 innings of one-hit work, striking out three and walking none.
At the plate, the bats were able to keep Georgia Tech in it, scoring six runs in the final four innings. In addition to Jenkins’ three hits and three RBI, Drew Compton also went 2-for-3 with two RBI on the day. Tres Gonzalez and Stephen Reid also finished with two hits, while Jadyn Jackson hit a two-run double in the sixth.
The Cavaliers (24-3, 8-3 ACC) were led by Alex Tappen, who went 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBI, while RHP Paul Kosanovich (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings to get the win.
The Yellow Jackets will now battle in its first rubber match of the season on Sunday, April 3. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and WREK 91.1 FM.
