THE FLATS — Georgia Tech women’s tennis swept all matches in Baton Rouge, while Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones wrapped up the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in California on Saturday.
No. 3 Hourigan/Jones came up just short to claim a spot in the doubles final of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. The duo fought hard against Ole Miss’ Alexa Bortles/Arianna Hartono, but couldn’t force a deciding tiebreaker as the Rebels took the first set 6-2 and clinched the match edging out the Jackets in a second set tiebreaker, 7-5. The remainder of the squad had a successful day at the Tiger Fall Classic, sweeping all five singles matches and four doubles contests. Doubles kicked things off in the morning with two rounds of play. Pairing together, the Tech duo of Johnnise Renaud/Ida Jarlskog held strong for a 7-6 (12-10) victory over LSU’s Ryann Foster/Elyse Lavender before dominating Princeton’s Gaby Pollner/Katrine Steffensen 6-0 in the second round. Also pulling out a tough victory over LSU was the Jacket tandem of Victoria Flores/Nami Otsuka as the pair edged Kennan Johnson/Eden Richardson 7-6 (11-9). In the second round, the pair upended Princeton’s Sara Goodwin/Clare McKee, 6-4.
In singles action, Tech swept Kansas in five matches in the afternoon, four in straight sets. Renaud notched her third win of the day with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Nina Khmelnitckaia, while freshman Flores defeated Maria Ribes, 6-4, 6-4. Sophomores Otsuka and Nadia Gizdova pocketed 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-4 matches, respectively, over their opponents. Jarlskog rounded out singles play with a three-set win over Janet Koch, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Jackets conclude the Tiger Fall Classic on Sunday with the final round of singles beginning at 10 a.m.
