THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis closes out day two of play at the Georgia Tech Invitational at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex on Saturday. The finals will start Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with doubles, followed by singles at 9:45 a.m.

Michael Kay took his quarterfinals match in the west bracket over Vanderbilt’s Panu Virtanen. Phillip Gresk advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-3 rout of Vanderbilt’s Alex Ross. The sophomore moved over to the northeast finals after losing to Brandon Laubser (Auburn) where he will face Edward Nguyen (Auburn). After dropping his first match of the day, Elijah Melendez secured his spot in the finals of the Division III north draw with a 6-4, 6-2 rout of Furman’s Alex Steryous.
Doubles Update: The tournament kicked off Saturday morning with the doubles semifinals. Gresk and Fiegel topped Auburn’s Edward Nguyen and Brandon Laubser, 8-5. They’ll face Tennessee’s Steven Karl and Preston Touliatos in the finals on Sunday. Michael Kay and Daniel Yun moved to the northwest bracket after falling to Cameron Klinger and Billy Rowe (Vanderbilt), 8-7(4). The mixed pair of Melendez and Georgia’s Alex Phillips knocked off Furman’s Trevor Croyder and Clarke Wilson, 8-4 to advance to the Division III east finals. Andrew Li and Chris Yun took their match in the Division II west semifinals over Furman’s Jake Munns and Adam Steryous, 8-3.
Volunteer coach Kevin King says: “We came out strong in doubles; I think we made some corrections from yesterday and had a pretty strong showing there. We had one tough loss but overall played pretty well. I think we competed well and fought hard in singles but we just weren’t quite mentally strong enough. The other teams were playing well and just took it to us today. Second round, same thing happened. Mentally we’re just a little bit weak. We were trying the right things but we weren’t able to consistently do it point after point and that cost us today. But that’s something that we can work on moving forward and hopefully correct for tomorrow.”
