CLEMSON, S.C. – Senior Brian Ford and junior Chaunte Howard posted three top-five finishes to lead the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams at the Clemson Invitational on Saturday. The 20th-ranked women’s team finished second with 164.5 points, while the men finished fourth with 115.33 points.
Ford, a native of Ashland, Va., ran a NCAA Region qualifying time of 21.18 in the men’s 200-meter dash to finish in second place. Ford posted a time of 47.57 in the men’s 400 to finish the race in third place and ran a leg of the 4x400m relay team that clocked a season-best time of 3:10.24, finishing second.
Howard, a native of Riverside, Calif., won her 24th consecutive women’s collegiate high jump competition, clearing the bar at 6 feet, 2-and-one-quarter inches. She then ran a season-best time of 11.87 in the 100-meter dash to finish in second place and tallied a third-place finish in the women’s long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 6-and-three-quarter inches.
Junior Andriane Lapsley and freshman Shantia Moss tallied first-place finishes for the Yellow Jackets. Lapsley, a native of San Antonio, Texas, clocked a time of 11.57 in the women’s 100, while Moss, a native of Tamarac, Fla., ran a season-best time of 13.53 in the women’s 100-meter high hurdles.
Seniors Neil McDonagh, Montrell Person, sophomore Cristan Duvall and freshman Derek Hoye registered first-place finishes for the men. McDonagh crossed the finish line with a season-best time of 3:51.02.
Person ran a time of 13.90 in the 110-meter high hurdles, while Duvall posted a season-best time of 9:20.49 in the 3,000-steeplechase. Hoye, a native of Columbus, Ohio, recorded a season-best time of 1:51.77.
The women’s 4x100m relay team of Dana Rogers, Ashlee Kidd, Lapsley and Shantrell Moss clocked a time of 44.70 to log a first-place finish for the Jackets.
Freshman Jerome Miller cleared the men’s high jump bar at 6 feet, 10-and-three-quarter inches, to finish in a tie for second place. That mark was a season-best for the freshman and his first NCAA Region qualifying standard.
Senior Jennifer Lentz, junior Brandy Depland, sophomore Mary Chind and freshman Maria Hampton posted second-place finish for Tech. Lentz ran a time of 2:13.86 in the women’s 800 meters, while Chind finished with a time of 4:46.25 in the women’s 1500 meters. Hampton tallied a season-best time of 18:16.44 in the women’s 5,000 meters, while Depland posted a mark of 43 feet, 2-and-a-half inches.
Rogers and sophomore Fatmata Fofanah tallied second- and third-place finishes for the Jackets in the women’s 100m HH. Rogers, a senior from East Point, ran a time of 13.55, while Fofanah finished with a time of 13.83.
Leading Tech in the discus was senior Dore’ Madere and junior Jewel Welch. Madere tallied a season-best toss of 146 feet, 8 inches, while Welch threw a season-best 145 feet, 1 inch.
The Yellow Jackets will not be in action again until the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, April 21-23, in Tallahassee, Fla.
