Rocky Face, Ga. – Ollie Schniederjans, Drew Czuchry and Michael Hines each shot even-par 72 Friday to pace third-ranked Georgia Tech as the Yellow Jackets are in ninth place after 18 holes at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga.

Neighboring Kennesaw State, an NCAA Championship team in 2013, took the first round lead with a 7-under-par 281, one stroke ahead of LSU (-6, 282) and the trio of top-ranked Alabama, North Carolina and Wake Forest (-2, 286). Clemson also finished under par (-1, 287) and is in sixth place.

The Yellow Jackets, 5-under-par at one point during the round and nipping at the heels of the Owls, struggled on the finishing holes after a 1-hour, 15-minute weather delay and finished at 5-over-par 293, 12 strokes off the lead. Schniederjans, a senior from Powder Springs, Ga., defending his 2013 Carpet Capital title, and Czuchry, a senior from Auburn, each played the front nine 2-under-par. But Schniederjans bogeyed three of the final four holes, and Czuchry bogeyed three of six coming in. Hines, a sophomore playing his first tournament since spring of 2013, did the opposite, playing the front nine in 2-over before posting three birdies on the back side before a closing bogey.

Those three players are tied for 18th place individually. Andrew Weathers of Chattanooga and Benjamin Taylor of LSU set the pace individually Friday, each carding a 5-under-par 67. Davis Womble of Wake Forest and Jimmy Beck of Kennesaw State are one stroke back at 68 (-4). Seventeen players in the 75-player field broke par in Friday’s round.

Tech counted a 5-over 77 from Anders Albertson and discarded a 78 from freshman Jacob Joiner. Albertson, a senior from Woodstock, Ga., finished with a bogey and a triple-bogey, while Joiner was 5-over on the last four holes. Sophomore Vincent Whaley, competing as an individual, also had difficulty on the final holes, but finished with a 73 and is in a large group of players tied for 24th place.

Tech is paired with South Carolina and Chattanooga, tied for seventh place two shots ahead of the Jackets, for Saturday’s second round and will be first off the tee at 7:30 a.m.
