THE FLATS – Sophomore Matt Gonzalez legged out an RBI infield single to cap a three-run seventh-inning rally and the White Team walked off with a 4-3 win over the Gold Team Sunday at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Gonzalez’s game-winning single scored freshman CF Keenan Innis, whose run-scoring single pulled the White Team within a run at 3-2 in the inning. Senior Mott Hyde followed in the next at-bat with a game-tying RBI groundout, and Gonzalez won it.
It’s the second straight walk-off win in the series as the Gold Team grabbed the first game Friday, 3-2, thanks to Thomas Smith’s game-winning RBI single.
The Gold Team jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an unearned run off senior starter Dusty Isaacs in the third and that remained the score until senior Mitch Earnest made its 3-0 in the sixth with a two-run bomb to left.
Senior Alex Cruz put the White Team on the board in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to right to drive in Gonzalez, who ripped a double off the wall in right-center.
Gonzalez finished 2-for-4 to pace White’s seven-hit attack. Freshman Elliott Barzilli went 2-for-3 for the White Team.
Rookie righty Ben Parr pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the White Team and earned the win. Isaacs got the start for White and tossed four innings of one-hit ball with no walks and five strikeouts but did not factor in the decision.
The rubber game of the three-game White-Gold mini-series is set for Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.
