Golfers Tied for Fifth at Carpet Capital Collegiate

ATLANTA – Kevin Larsen carded a three-under-par 69 Friday, and Roberto Castro added a one-under 71 to pace Georgia Tech, and the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets are in a four-way tie for fifth place after the first round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga.

The Yellow Jackets posted a one-over-par team total of 289, 13 shots behind leader Alabama, which got a pair of 68s from Michael Thompson and Gator Todd to post a 12-under 276. Fourth-ranked Clemson is two shots behind after a 10-under round of 278. NC State (285) is a distant third, followed by Georgia State (286). Tech is tied with Augusta State, Wake Forest and Duke.

Larsen, a senior from Santa Barbara, Calif., had five birdies and two bogeys in his round of 69 at The Farm Golf Club, a 6,906-yard, par-72 layout. He is tied with four others for ninth place individually, four shots off the pace. Castro, a senior from Alpharetta, Ga., is in a 10-way tie for 19th place after his three-birdie, two-bogey round.

Tech also counted a 73 from sophomore Cameron Tringale (tied for 30th place) and a 76 from sophomore Taylor Hall (tied for 58th), and discarded a 78 from sophomore Adam Cohan.

Individually, NC State’s Darren Blair shot 65 Friday, seven shots under par, for a one-stroke lead over Clemson’s Vince Hatfield. Jake Younan-Wise of Texas Tech shot 67 and is in third, followed by Brendan Gielow of Wake Forest, Chris Kirk of Georgia, Kyle Stanley of Clemson, Thompson and Todd.
