ATLANTA –
Cameron Tringale fired a 5-under-par 67 Sunday, and David Dragoo posted a 74 to complete his first career top-10 finish as Georgia Tech placed 11th at the Carpet Capital Collegiate golf tournament in Rocky Face, Ga.
Tringale’s round, coupled with an even-par 72 effort from J.T. Griffin, a 73 from Taylor Hall and Dragoo’s 74, enabled the 10th-ranked Yellow Jackets to post their best score (2-under-par 286) of the weekend and move up four spots to 11th place.
Starting on the 10th hole, Tringale set the pace with four birdies and no bogeys on the back nine. He posted the low round of the day and finished in a tie for seventh place individually at 1-under-par 215. It was the 16th top-10 finish in 36 career events for the senior from Laguna Niguel, Calif.
Dragoo, two shots off the lead to begin the day, played the back nine two shots under par and briefly held the lead alone when he stepped onto the fourth tee (his 13th hole). But the senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., bogeyed four of the final six holes and also finished at 215. Still, it was the highest finish of his career, eclipsing his tie for 13th at last year’s ACC Championship.
“It was a very positive day for Cameron. Pretty terrific performance for David, absolutely,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. “He got in there, and now he knows what that feels like to contend on a tough golf course.”
Clemson All-America Kyle Stanley, with a 69 Sunday and an 8-under-par tournament total of 208, took medalist honors by five strokes over South Carolina’s Allen Koon and Chattanooga’s Jonathan Hodge.
Tech was 7-under-par through 12 holes of its Sunday round, but gave back five shots on the last six holes to finish at 16-over-par 880 for the tournament. The Jackets were 14 shots off the pace of Chattanooga (even-par 864 for 54 holes), which surged on the back nine to capture a five-stroke victory over Tennessee. South Carolina (6-over) took third place, followed by Florida (9-over), Alabama (11-over) and Georgia (12-over). Texas Tech and Mississippi tied for eighth place at 13-over-par, while Wake Forest was 10th at 15-over.
“We need to learn how to finish,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. “We fought hard to gain ground, and it was disappointing to give those shots away coming in. There are so many good teams, we need to fight hard for every shot. It was a good round today overall, but it could have been much better.”
Hall tied for 56th at 9-over 225 for the Jackets, while Griffin tied for 71st (12-over) and freshman William Miller tied for 78th (15-over) in his collegiate debut.
Tech’s next tournament is the PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational, Sept. 26-28, in Toledo, Ohio.
