Golf Team Finishes Ninth at SHC Masters

March 14, 2010

Las Vegas, Nev. –

James White shot a 73 to pace Georgia Tech Sunday, and the 14th-ranked Yellow Jackets closed with a 306 as a team and tied for ninth at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters golf tournament.

White, a sophomore from Acworth, Ga., shot the Yellow Jackets’ best individual score of the tournament in a week when scores remained high on the 7,510-yard, par 72 Southern Highlands Golf Club. He finished in a tie for 16h place to lead the Jackets, posting an 11-over-par score of 227, eight strokes behind medalist Jesper Kennegard of Arizona State (3-over 219). It was his fifth top-20 finish in six tournaments this year.

Tech also counted a 75 from junior John-Tyler Griffin, a 78 from senior Chesson Hadley and an 80 from junior Paul Haley. Hadley tied for 29th place at 15-over 231, while Griffin tied for 37th at 18-over 234.

“We played better today,” said head coach Bruce Heppler, whose team began the day in 14th place. “James had a great round, and Chesson did pretty well considering he hasn’t played for a while. I’m please that we moved up against such a tough field.”

The 15-team field included 13 of the nation’s top 30 teams. Host UNLV, the nation’s 18th-ranked team, and No. 11 UCLA tied for first place in the team race at 35-over-par 899. No. 17 Southern California and No. 7 Texas A&M tied for third nine shots back at 908, followed by No. 16 Texas Tech at 911 and No. 12 Arizona State at 913. Fourth-ranked Texas was seventh at 919, and No. 29 TCU was eighth at 920.

The Yellow Jackets tied for ninth with No. 27 Tennessee at 928.

Tech is off until March 26-28 when it competes in the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga.
