THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech baseball team has released its 2014 schedule, highlighted by 35 home games, three games versus rival Georgia, match ups with eight teams that reached the NCAA Regionals in 2013 and a late-season series versus USF.
The Yellow Jackets’ 56-game slate begins Friday, February 14 versus Old Dominion in the Georgia Tech Invitational at 4 p.m. Tech also welcomes VCU and Radford for the opening-weekend tournament that will be played in a round-robin format. It is the first time the Yellow Jackets have hosted an in-season tournament.
Following the GT Invitational, the Jackets are in Statesville to battle Georgia Southern (Feb. 19) and then return home for two separate seven-game homestands sandwiched around a game at Georgia (March 4). The Jackets have a season-long 10-game homestand in early April.
Tech, which is scheduled to play 41 of its 56 games within the state of Georgia this season, will not leave the Peach State until March 21 (at North Carolina). The Jackets end the slate with seven of the last 11 at home, including a series versus USF on the final weekend of the regular season.
Eight opponents played in the NCAA postseason in 2013 (North Carolina, NC State, Florida State, Virginia, Miami, Virginia Tech, Mercer and Savannah State), with four in the Super Regionals (UNC, FSU, UVa and NCSU) and the Tar Heels and Wolf Pack reaching the College World Series.
Georgia Tech’s home ACC opponents are Wake Forest, Miami, Duke, Florida State and Virginia Tech. On the road in ACC play, Tech faces North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Maryland, NC State and Virginia.
The trip to Pittsburgh to face the ACC newcomer Panthers marks the first-ever meeting with Pitt and the first time the Jackets have played in the Keystone State since 1924 (versus Penn State).
Tech will not play Clemson, Boston College or Notre Dame in league play, marking the first time the Jackets and Tigers have not met on the diamond since 1973.
Long-time rivals Georgia Tech and Georgia are set for three games – March 4 in Athens, April 15 at Russ Chandler Stadium and May 13 at Turner Field in the annual Kauffman Tire Spring Classic for Kids.
The ACC Championship will be contested at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C. May 21-25, with NCAA Regional play beginning May 31.
