Georgia Tech #ProJackets Golf Report

THE FLATSCameron Tringale challenged once again to earn his first PGA Tour win, but once again finished as a runner-up … Andy Ogletree and Chris Petefish have earned Korn Ferry Tour status by advancing to the finals of the KFT Q-School … More details below in this week’s Georgia Tech #ProJackets Report.

TRINGALE FINISHES RUNNER-UP FOR FOURTH TIME

Halfway across the world, Cameron Tringale went in search of his first PGA Tour victory and found himself in the lead during the final round of the ZOZO Championship in Chiba, Japan. He was challenging the home country’s favorite son, Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion who had led the ZOZO after 54 holes.

Matsuyama gave his adoring fans an unforgettable performance, however, making three birdies and an eagle on the back nine to overtake Tringale and win the tournament, leaving the Georgia tech All-American a runner-up for the fourth time in his career.

Tringale was bidding for his first victory in his 314th PGA Tour start, just nine fewer than Rickie Barnes, who has made the most starts (323) without a victory. Tringale already owns the dubious distinction of being the all-time money leader without a victory. The 34-year-old entered the week with earnings of $14,522,401, 141st all-time and a spot ahead of former World No. 1 and 20-time Tour winner Greg Norman, and crossed the $15-million mark by cashing a check for $875,600.

“He didn’t finish well [Saturday] and so to really slam the door and hit an incredible second shot and hole the putt, it was storybook,” Tringale said of Matsuyama. “It was cool.”

After going bogey-free in the first 16 holes of the final round, Tringale posted back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18 to close out the tournament 10-under 270 in his first appearance at the ZOZO Championship. He had previously posted runner-up finishes at the 2014 FedEx St. Jude Championship, the 2015 Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the 2015 Shriners Children’s Open. It was his best finish in four starts in the 2021-22 PGA TOUR Season, and improved his FedEx Cup standing from No. 26 to No. 7.

Since 2011, he’s registered eight top-three finishes without a win, which is tied for the third most on Tour.

Chesson Hadley also made the trip to Japan for the limited-field, no-cut event and tied for 62nd place.

Seth Reeves and Vincent Whaley will be Georgia Tech’s lone representatives this week at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

OGLETREE, PETEFISH ADVANCE TO KORN FERRY TOUR FINALS

Andy Ogletree and Chris Petefish both advanced from the second-state Korn Ferry Tour Q-School qualifying events to the finals last week, thereby earning partial status on the Korn Ferry Tour for 2022. The Q-School finals will be held Nov. 4-7 in Savannah, Ga., where they have an opportunity to earn full status.

Ogletree finished second at Dothan, Ala., with a 16-under-par total of 272, one stroke shy of winning the event. Luke Schniederjans missed advancing by one stroke as the top 20 players and ties move on to the finals.

The 2019 U.S. Amateur champion, Ogletree has played in 10 PGA Tour events but hadn’t made a start in a KFT event having spent the last five months in 2021 recovering after undergoing hip surgery in April. Ogletree returned at the Sanderson Farms Championship on another sponsor’s invite and made the cut.

Petefish was one of 19 players to advanced from the second-stage event in Murrieta, Calif., tying for eighth place at 10-under-par 278. The Danville, Calif., native spent last season on the Forme Tour.

Nicholas Thompson failed to advance at Plantation, Fla., and Noah Norton did not make it our of the qualifier at Albuquerque, N.M.
