THE FLATS – Derrick Favors continues to average 12 and seven boards per game … Jarrett Jack adjusts to new role mentoring young players … Iman Shumpert continues to battle back from a foot injury … Thaddeus Young records 11 steals in three games … All of this and more can be found in this week’s Georgia Tech #ProJackets Basketball Report.
Returning from the All-Star break, Derrick Favors continues to average near a double-double as the Jazz open March with four-straight wins. Favors was kept out of Monday’s contest with Orlando due to neck spasms but returned to the starting lineup Wednesday night to help defeat Indiana, 10-4-84. The big man is averaging 12.2 points and 7.4 rebounds in his 28.2 minutes per game thus far, continuing his commitment to giving his all for the Jazz, despite opportunities to leave. Utah next heads to the Grizzlies on Friday with tipoff scheduled for 8 p.m.
Marcus Georges-Hunt continues to see sporadic minutes for the Minnesota Timberwolves, now averaging just below two per game. As the Wolves vie for playoff positioning, they’ve won just two of their last three heading into a Thursday night showdown with the Boston Celtics at 8 p.m.
Jarrett Jack hasn’t seen the floor since Feb. 14, but that hasn’t meant the veteran point guard has stopped contributing to the Knicks. Jack is “content in his role as a mentor to the Knicks’ young guards while hoping he gets to play in some games before the season is out,” focusing on the future of the organization more so than himself. Saying, “Whatever I’m going to do after basketball is whatever I’m passionate about,” Jack may be being groomed to become a head coach down the line by Jeff Hornacek.
After being traded from Cleveland to the Sacramento Kings, Iman Shumpert has still not been cleared to play after sustaining a foot injury. Shumpert’s last appearance on the floor was Jan. 23.
Winning three of their last five, Thaddeus Young has scored in double figures three times as well, in addition to grabbing eight rebounds twice for the Pacers. Young actually was held scoreless in the 98-95 win over the Wizards, but grabbed four boards and three steals on the night to help in the effort. Indiana continues to jostle for postseason seeding when it hosts Atlanta on Friday night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
