Georgia Tech Opens Homestand with Furman, Georgia State

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (8-2) returns for an eight-game homestand beginning with Furman on Tuesday and Georgia State on Wednesday, both at 3 p.m. at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets most recently competed in the Bulldog Kickoff Classic, winning three games and shutting down host Mississippi State in the tournament finale for a 4-1 win.

Georgia Tech’s game against Furman will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra, while the contest against Georgia State will be aired on ACC Network.

The game against Georgia State on Wednesday will be recognized as Abilities Day, accompanied by pregame activities provided by the Office of Disabilities.

Storylines

  • Georgia Tech has outscored its opponents 59-31 to date.
  • The Yellow Jackets went 3-2 in the Bulldog Kickoff Classic, taking a pair of wins over Southern Illinois before topping host Mississippi State in the final contest.
  • Tech is off to an 8-2 start, its best since opening the 2014 season 11-2.
  • Junior Blake Neleman tossed a career-high 13 strikeouts in the season opener against Saint Joseph’s, fanning 12 of the 13 batters on the way to a complete game win. On Sunday, Neleman nearly matched that total with 12 punchouts in another complete game win over Mississippi State, her fifth complete game win on the year.
  • Graduate senior slugger Tricia Awald has gotten a hit in every game this season. In doing so, Awald and junior catcher Emma Kauf have both reached base in every game this season.
  • The Jackets are currently top 15 in the country and among the league’s best in multiple categories – ninth in the nation and second in the conference in doubles on the season (19), 15th in the NCAA and second in the ACC in doubles per game (3) and 15th in the land and third in the league in on-base percentage (0.443).
  • Tech stacks up among the nation’s best defensively as well, placing 14th in the country and second in the conference in fielding percentage (.985).
  • The White and Gold have been proficient at the plate overall, ranking fifth in the ACC in batting average (.328) and third in the NCAA while leading the ACC in walks (51).
  • Awald is among the nation’s best at the dish, third in the country and leading the conference in on-base percentage (.725), ranking fourth in the nation and leading the league in batting average (.593) and sitting 21st in NCAA and second in the ACC in slugging percentage (1.000).
  • Kauf has risen to the top of the country in extra base hits, placing fourth in the land and second in the conference in doubles this season (6).
  • To date, Neleman is fifth in the country and second in the conference in strikeouts (53). Her five wins on the year are also tied for the nation’s lead.
  • Freshman Emma Minghini has gotten off to a hot start in her first collegiate season, ranking 20th in the nation and fourth in the league in RBI (13).
  • Awald and Kauf find themselves tied for 18th in the NCAA and third in the ACC in hits on the season with 16 apiece.

Series Notes

  • Georgia Tech leads Furman 25-18 in the all-time series. The Yellow Jackets have claimed the last four contests and 16 of the last 17 meetings after winning 12 straight from 2002-08. The White and Gold won 14-2 in five innings by mercy rule on the road in the last matchup in 2019. The Jackets are 14-6 at home against the Paladins.
  • Tech is currently doubling Georgia State in the all-time series, leading 50-25. The Jackets have won the last three contests, including an 8-0 mercy rule victory in five innings at home a season ago. The White and Gold took control of the series from 2001-11, going 28-2 against the crosstown foe for a decade. Tech is 25-9 at home in the series.

Standing room only tickets will be sold for $2 each if all other sections are sold out. Georgia Tech students and faculty/staff can receive free admission to regular season home games while seats remain available by showing a valid BuzzCard at the entrance.
