THE FLATS – Senior Jonathan Gardner and junior Nikita Kirillov of the Georgia Tech men’s track and field teams earned second team All-America honors, and senior Julienne McKee and junior Jeremy Greenwald earned Honorable Mention honors at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday.
A native of Chicago, Ill., Gardner finished 15th overall in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 15.83 meters (51 feet, 11 1/4 inches). It marks the second-career All-America recognition for Gardner after he earned first team honors in the triple jump in 2013.
In his first career trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Kirillov logged a mark of 5.40m (17-8.50) to tie with Washington’s Jax Thoirs and earn second-team All-America honors. The junior passed the first two rounds of 5.10m and 5.25m on his first tries, and it took two attempts to clear 5.40m.
McKee earned Honorable Mention honors in both of her events – the long and triple jumps – marking the fifth and sixth USTFCCCA honors for McKee. McKee took 23rd in the triple jump with a distance of 12.42m (40-09.00). The Marietta, Ga., native also competed in the long jump and placed 20th with a distance of 6.09m (19-11.75).
Greenwald ran in his first career NCAA Championship event in the 1500-meter semifinals and earned honorable mention honors. He placed 17th with a time of 3:47.36.
First-Team All-America honors were awarded to those who finished among the top eight in an individual or relay event as part of a team; Second-Team All-America honors went to those who finished between ninth and 16th; and Honorable Mention honors were given to the remaining finishers.
