Greensboro, N.C. – Junior Ben Parr, sophomores Kel Johnson and Trevor Craport and freshman Brandt Stallings were named to the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference All-ACC Academic team announced Friday by the conference office and commissioner John Swofford.
Parr, a left-handed pitcher from Social Circle, Ga., and Johnson, an outfielder from Palmetto, Ga., made the team for the second time each. Craport, an infielder from Norcross, Ga., and Stallings, an outfielder from Buford, Ga., were first-time selections.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
In a mostly mid-reliever role this spring, Parr made 25 appearances, ranking second on the team, with three starts. The southpaw posted 7-1 record with 4.18 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 60.1 innings.
After focusing on pitching as freshman, Craport moved over to offense as sophomore, starting 56 games, including 52 at third base. He ranked second on team with .352 batting average and added seven home runs and 31 runs batted in. Craport was statistically toughest Yellow Jacket to strike out, once every 11.7 at bats, and recorded 20 multi-hit games and five multi-RBI games.
The slugging Johnson started 61 games for the Yellow Jackets, making 41 starts in outfield and 20 as designated hitter. He finished fourth on team with .319 average with 16 doubles and two triples and tied for the team lead with 11 home and 54 RBI. Johnson was one of three Tech players named first-team All-ACC.
Stallings played in 47 games as a true freshman, making 36 starts between designated hitter and outfield. He finished the season with a .299 batting average with seven home runs and 33 RBI.
Clemson’s Pat Krall, the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, led the 2016 All-ACC Academic Team, which includes 12 players who were previously being named to the All-ACC Team: Johnson, Clemson’s Seth Beer and Krall, Duke’s Jack Labosky, Louisville’s Nick Solak, Devin Hairston, Blake Tiberi, and Will Smith, Miami’s Bryan Garcia, and Wake Forest’s Nate Mondou, Stuart Fairchild, and Parker Dunshee.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
