Former Jacket Garciaparra Nominated For CWS Legends Team

March 29, 2010

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Former Georgia Tech All-American shortstop Nomar Garciaparra is a nominee for the College World Series Legends Team that will be honored at the 2010 College World Series in Omaha, Neb. Fans have the chance to vote for the 60-person team online at

The Legends Team will represent those student-athletes who had the best CWS performances in the 60 years the event has been played at Rosenblatt Stadium. The 2010 CWS will be the last to be played in Omaha’s Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium. Voting for the CWS Legends Team is underway and will run until Noon on Friday, April 16. Fans are encouraged to vote at

Garciaparra helped lead Georgia Tech to its first ever trip to baseball’s promise land in 1994, and within one win of the school’s first ever NCAA Championship. He was named to the CWS All-Tournament team after batting .300 with a double, two home runs and four RBI in the four games in Omaha.

Garciaparra was a two-time first-team All-America and Academic All-America at Georgia Tech in 1993 and 1994, and was inducted into the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame in 2004. He hit .427 with 16 home runs, 73 RBI and 33 stolen bases in his final year.

The CWS Legends Team will have 27 members: two student-athletes per fielding position, four pitchers, two designated hitters, three head coaches and two “utility players.” The utility players will be determined after fan voting and represent those student-athletes deserving recognition who may not have been selected by fans, media and coaches at a particular position. From the list of names, fans are asked to cast their vote for the best players and coaches based solely on their performance during the NCAA College World Series. Fans will only be able to submit a vote once.

Representatives from the National Baseball Writers Association and all NCAA Division I head baseball coaches will be encouraged to vote as well. The NCAA will take all voting into consideration prior to making its announcement of the final CWS Legends Team roster.

The CWS Legends Team members will be invited to attend the final College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium. Those in attendance will be formally honored during the CWS Opening Ceremonies in Rosenblatt Stadium on Friday, June 18. Tickets go on sale April 3. For more information go to
