THE FLATS – A pair of Georgia Tech women’s basketball incoming freshmen have both earned top honors to cap their high school careers. Kierra Fletcher was tabbed the MLive Detroit Female Athlete of the Year, while Daijah Jefferson picked up Virginia All Star Preps Female Basketball Athlete of the Year.
A two-time MLive Detroit Player of the Year, most recently following her senior season, Fletcher helped lead Warren Cousino High School back to the state semifinals this past season. As a senior, Fletcher averaged 23.5 points, 12.8 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 5.2 steals and 2.1 blocks. She was also named the Class A Player of the Year by the Associated Press. As a junior, she helped lead Warren Cousino to its first-ever state championship, earning first team class A all-state.
“We are excited about the impact Kierra can have on our program,” commented Tech head coach MaChelle Joseph. “She is a special player with tremendous potential and this is a well-deserved recognition for the outstanding high school career she had.”
Also wrapping up her high school career with a top nod, Jefferson garnered Virginia All Star Preps Female Basketball Athlete of the Year as a senior. Additionally, the Hopewell, Va., native collected American Family Insurance ALL-USA Virginia Girls Basketball Second Team accolades.
“Daijiah is an exceptional athlete and more importantly a tremendous person and student,” Joseph stated. “She will have an immediate impact on our program. This is a special freshmen class! The future is bright.”
Georgia Tech returns nine letterwinners from last season’s squad that reached the title game of the WNIT. Fletcher and Jefferson were members of Tech’s 16th-ranked incoming class. The Jackets add four newcomers to the 2017-18 roster (Taja Cummings, Fletcher, Jefferson and graduate transfer Breanna Brown).
