TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Five Yellow Jackets on the Georgia Tech track and field team earned All-ACC honors as the men’s team placed 13th (22 team points) and the women took 15th (11 points) at the 2015 ACC Outdoor Championships in Tallahassee, Fla., at the Seminoles’ Mike Long Track. Clemson won the women’s competition (113.5), and Florida State took won the men’s competition (136).
“I was very pleased with the way this team fought in this Championship,” head men’s track coach Grover Hinsdale said. “I would like to congratulate our All-ACC honorees: Nathan Daniel in the pole vault, Jeremy Greenwald in the 1500m, and Brandon Lasater in both the 1500m and 800m. These young men did an exceptional job this weekend.”
“We got two great performances today from senior Samantha Becker and freshman Bailey Weiland,” head women’s track and distance coach Alan Drosky said. “It was awesome to see Sam jump a personal best of 4.21m in the pole vault and earn first team All-ACC honors with her third place finish. And it was also fantastic to see Bailey jump 1.75m in the high jump to earn second team All-ACC honors with her fifth place finish. Both of them have great momentum going into the NCAA Preliminary Round in two weeks.
“From a team standpoint we’re disappointed in our finish. But the results don’t tell the whole story. We’ve got a great group of young athletes who are developing well, but just finishing out of scoring positions. With more time we’re going to see them move up and we’ll see it reflected in the team scoring soon.”
Senior Samantha Becker took third in the women’s pole vault with a huge personal-best to earn All-ACC First Team honors. Becker cleared the bar at 4.21m (13-9.75), more than two inches higher than her previous best, to earn Georgia Tech six team points.
In the men’s pole vault, Nathan Daniel placed sixth at 4.97m (16-3.50) for All-ACC Second Team honors and three team points.
Freshman Bailey Weiland took fifth (1.75m (5-8.75) in the high jump to earn All-ACC Second Team honors and scored four team points.
Jeremy Greenwald and Brandon Lasater finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 1,500 meters to both earn All-ACC Second Team honors and scored nine total team points.
Lasater took fourth in the 800 meters for another All-ACC Second Team performance. He crossed the line in a time of 1:49.46 for five team points, while teammate Andres Littig took eighth (1:51.43) for one team point.
Ryan Thomas placed eighth in the men’s triple jump to earn Tech one team point. Thomas logged a mark of 15.00m (29-2.50). Preston Smith placed 10th with a career-best distance 14.53m (47-8.00).
The men’s 4×100-meter relay run by Zachary Gunnz, Broderick Snoddy, Spencer Allen and Alexander Reese placed seventh in a season-best time of 41.31 for two team points.
The Jackets are back in action May 28-30 at the NCAA East Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla.
