Five Top-10 Finishes for Tech on Day One of Clemson Opener

CLEMSON, S.C. – Alana Clooten placed first in the women’s weight throw to lead the Georgia Tech track and field teams on the first day of the Clemson Opener at the Rock Norman Track & Field Complex in Clemson, S.C.

Clooten finished with a throw of 60 feet, 6 ¾ inches to earn the first-place finish. Kimery Hern, an All-American in the outdoor hammer throw, placed second with a mark of 58 feet, 11 ½ inches.

In the women’s long jump, Antoinetta McKay finished fourth with a best jump of 18 feet, 7 inches.

In running events, Tenisha Griggs qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a ninth-place finish and a time of 8.95. Jenae Anderson, a freshman from Knoxville, Tenn., placed ninth in the 60-meter prelims with a time of 7.70 to earn a spot in the finals.

On the men’s side, James Lemons II finished second in the long jump with a mark of 23 feet. The other top-10 finish went to Andy Powlen, who placed eighth in the weight throw with a best toss of 50 feet, 3 ½ inches.

Alphonso Jordan finished second in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.08 to earn a spot in tomorrow’s finals. Also qualifying for the 60m hurdles final was Dave Ford, who place seventh with a time of 8.24.

The Clemson Opener continues tomorrow morning with five events including the men’s 60m hurdles final beginning at 11 a.m. Results will be posted on www.ramblinwreck.com at the conclusion of the day.
